IT’S ELEVEN O’CLOCK, and I still haven’t heard from CeCe.

She said she would call me at ten. I waited with my phone right beside me, and then I started calling her, but there was no answer, each call clicking straight to voice mail.

Is she so mad at me that she’s decided she doesn’t want to talk? I guess it’s a possibility, but CeCe isn’t one for games, so somehow, that doesn’t sit right with me.

Midnight. No answer to my texts or calls. A direct call to her hotel room with no answer now has me worried.

I pace the kitchen floor, Hank Junior awake and watching me with a concerned expression.

“What should I do?” I ask, looking down at him.

Hank whines, gets up, and circles the room once before walking back over to sit next to me. I think he would tell me if he could.

I don’t want to do it, but I can’t sleep until I know she’s okay. I walk to the refrigerator and look at the note CeCe had left with Jacob’s cell number written on it.

I wait then while the phone rings and rings. His voice comes on – leave a message – and that’s it.

“Damn it!” Frustrated, I slam my phone on the kitchen counter. My wife is in another country, out of touch, and I have no way of knowing whether she’s okay or not.

Hank follows me upstairs, his footsteps behind me sounding as dejected as I feel.
